Uplands Nova Scotia
A Licensed Guide for Upland Bird hunting.

Gary Cain, a licensed hunting and fishing guide in South Western Nova Scotia, will make your next hunting trip an experience you will not soon forget.

Your hosts Gary and Linda Cain

Nova Scotia offers excellent grouse and woodcock hunting that you can access, with your own dogs, or with Gary's close working English Setters.

A successful hunt

Southwestern Nova Scotia has enjoyed a succession of mild winters, the result being that all the upland species (woodcock and grouse) are doing well. For those pheasant hunters out there, we have wild ring-necks that you will encounter from time to time.

This area of the province is ideally situated across the Bay of Fundy from Maine & the eastern seaboard of the United States. It is serviced by scheduled airlines out of Boston, MA., Newark, NJ., & other U.S. centers to Halifax N.S., a short drive from us.

The St. John, New Brunswick, to Digby, Nova Scotia ferry is a short 2.5 hour crossing that will bring you to us in less than an hour from Digby.

Yarmouth Airport is closed to commercial airlines but is operational for chartered flights.

Please check our Accommodations section for information on rates and references.

Uplands Nova Scotia
Hunting experience

Gary can offer 3 or 6 day hunts from mid October to mid November for "grouse" and his favorite, "woodcock". He has intimate knowledge of the many small to medium sized coverts, consisting primarily of alder, along stream beds, former pastures. orchards and farmlands. Gary's son Donald, is also a guide and has a thorough knowledge of
the area, allowing him to accommodate larger parties.

woodcock
We have resident breeding Woodcock in our coverts throughout the season which begins on October 1st. Large numbers of flight birds show up here beginning in mid October. We experience multiple flights that feed and rest in our coverts building fat reserves. They remain here through mid to late November, until freezing temperatures and favorable winds send them across the Bay of Fundy to New England and points south. Our coverts provide the best gunning and opportunities for improving dog work or starting a young dog when coverts in the rest of Atlantic Canada and some northern States in the United States of America have lost their birds entirely.
We expect 20-30 (up to 50 on occasion) flushes per day.

Ruffed Grouse

Our grouse population has held up well following a significant increase in these fine birds in 2006.Our woodcock coverts have grouse in residence throughout the season. Numbers of these fine birds build, beginning around October 20th as birds from our big woods enter to feed on buds and apples.

There exists a population of wild pheasants. These birds are found in or around woodcock and grouse coverts and hunters should expect to get 1 or 2 flushes of cock birds per trip. This is not preserve hunting.

Pheasant

Present limits for all upland species are generous and offer real opportunity for improving dog work.

  • Woodcock: 8/day - 16 in possession
  • Grouse: 5/day - 10 in possession
  • Cock Pheasant: 2/day - 4 in possession
Hunting with Setter
If you are fortunate enough to own your own dogs, by all means, bring them. Gary will enjoy seeing them work or you can hunt over his Setters.

Review from the newsletter Cast & Blast November, 2004

"We have just returned from a hunt in Nova Scotia. The shooting was very good. We flew approximately twenty woodcock and fifteen grouse each day and this was without flight birds.
He and his son Don, who also guided, were great company."

Review from the newsletter Cast & Blast November, 2005

"Several of your fellow club members shot with Gary Cain this fall in Nova Scotia. There were two separate trips and everyone had a great time. John Minerly and Charlie Frye were flying up to forty birds a day, with Charlie noting that it was as fine a woodcock shoot as he has ever had.
If you would like to make an enjoyable trip with a gracious host, you should consider shooting with Gary."
